“Why is it slow?”
The answer comes with measured data.

It can't talk about everything: it knows a few things, and those it has measured on that computer. No artificial intelligence model: a hand-written rules engine that recognizes the question and answers with the values it reads at that moment. You can write in English or Italian, and everything stays on the computer.

Other programs look at the PC once and hand back a number. TurboFix looks at it every day and keeps the history. After a few weeks it can answer the question that matters: compared with a month ago, how is it doing? You ask in plain language.

Since a new program appeared (June 24) the PC takes 17 seconds longer to boot, and memory is fuller than before.

The difference

No number is there to scare you.

PC cleaners have earned a terrible reputation, and for the most part they deserve it: they count everything they find just to show a big number and get you to click “Fix now”. TurboFix is built on the opposite rule: it doesn't invent problems.

  • Counts every registry entry and every cookie it finds as an “error”.
  • The big number is there to make you click “Fix now”.
  • If the computer has no problems, it won't say so: it would have nothing left to sell.
  • Shows an “optimization” percentage that doesn't correspond to any measurable value.

  • Every number comes from a measurement, with the date it was taken.
  • If the history is still short, it says so, instead of producing a made-up comparison.
  • If there's nothing to report, it says everything is fine and steps aside.
  • If it can't read a value, it stays quiet: no “I don't know” dressed up as a diagnosis.

The assistant no longer just explains.
It acts.

It used to point you to the page to open. Now it carries out the operation from the conversation and reports the actual result, not the expected one.

“Generate the report for me”

The report is generated and you're told the name of the file that was actually written. If the viewer program doesn't respond, it says so. While it works, progress is written out step by step.

“Run the cleanup”

First it measures how much there actually is to free up, then it asks for your go-ahead with that number in hand. Consent to an irreversible operation is always given with a button, never in words: the assistant recognizes requests by similarity, and a “yes” might be the answer to a different question.

“Set up my backup”

Three questions, where to save, what to protect, at what time, and a summary shown before anything is written. The password is never asked for in the conversation: it's handed to the Windows credential vault.

A no is respected

The same suggestion won't come back for two weeks, and an operation you've just run isn't suggested again for a week. If the operation is carried out later on, the earlier refusal expires.

1. the cleanup (frees 6.2 GB, deletes for real, needs your OK)
2. I generate and open the updated report

These are files the PC recreates on its own, but they are deleted for real, they don't go to the Recycle Bin. If the Recycle Bin still holds files you need, get them back first.

Done, but less than expected: 4.1 GB freed of the 6.2 estimated. 312 files were in use and couldn't be touched, which happens with browsers open. Close them and run the cleanup again to get the rest.

The word “done” comes from the number re-read afterwards, never from having launched the command. If the figures don't add up, it says so instead of rounding toward a happy ending.

Deeper checks

It checks what the others don't look at.

The PC could already tell you plenty, but nobody remembered any of it. Without memory you can say “there are 40 GB free”. With memory you can say “60 GB were lost in a month”, which is a completely different thing.

Battery wear

On laptops it compares the design capacity with the actual capacity at full charge. Battery health isn't declared from a single reading: it uses the median of the measurements recorded in the history, because an isolated reading depends on temperature and recent use.

The disks, day by day

A SMART counter that is high but hasn't moved in months isn't a problem. One that is climbing right now is the sign that most often precedes data loss. You can only see it by keeping the history, and TurboFix keeps it for 180 days.

Stalled updates

Windows updates left pending for weeks are one of the most mundane reasons a PC gets worse. If the service doesn't respond, which happens on company PCs, the app stays quiet instead of guessing.

Restore points

It tells you whether one exists and how recent it is. Past 90 days it's no longer a safety net: it's a memory.

Disk space

When free space on the system drive drops below ten percent, Windows has no room left for temporary files and virtual memory, and the PC slows down because of it. Space is tracked drive by drive in any case: every fixed drive has its own trend over time.

Services that appeared out of nowhere

When a program installs a service that starts on its own, TurboFix notices because it compares today's list with yesterday's. It's often the explanation behind “it's been slower for a while and I don't know why”.

When asked what to do first, the assistant puts these elements together and ranks them by severity. Not a to-do list: the two or three things that really matter, today, on this computer.

No artificial intelligence model.
A rules engine, on your computer.

No language model runs inside TurboFix, neither on the computer nor anywhere else. There's an engine that recognizes the question with hand-written rules and links it to a knowledge base curated entry by entry; the numbers it reads from the system at that moment. Nothing to download, nothing to train, nothing that leaves the computer.

  • Your questions stay on the computer. They are not sent to anyone.
  • It doesn't make things up: it has nothing to make them up with. A language model produces plausible words and now and then gets the numbers wrong. Here the numbers are the only source: if a value is missing, the answer says so.
  • Always the same answer. With the computer in the same state, the same question gets the same answer: you can check.
  • No account, no subscription. Install it and ask.
  • It works without the internet. A connection is needed for the license and for program updates; not for asking.
  • If it doesn't know, it says so. When it can't read a value, that area goes on the list of things it couldn't look at, instead of filling the gap with a plausible-sounding sentence.

What PC you need, plainly

Whatever it takes to run Windows. There's no extra download, no model to keep on the disk, no memory requirement beyond the program itself.

Why this choice. A language model, even one installed locally, takes up space, demands memory and remains a box that occasionally says things that aren't true. For the job the assistant does, it isn't needed: the questions about a computer are finite, and the answers have to come from measurements, not from predicting words.

With memory almost full, Windows starts using the disk in place of RAM, and that's when everything gets slow.

The two things that really help: close a few heavy programs (browsers with lots of tabs first) or, if it happens often, add a stick of RAM.

In all three cases the number doesn't come from a canned sentence: the program reads it on the computer, and if it can't, it says so. The action never starts on its own: you press the button, and wherever possible it can be undone.
